Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. You may view the Gravatar service privacy policy for more information. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Currently comments are disabled on the site so this feature is not used and info is not collected, however the comment feature may be enabled in the future without notice.

Contact Forms

Messages sent to us through the contact forms found on the homepage and sidebar will store the name, email and message of the sender. The IP address may also be checked through a spam detection plugin to prevent spam in the contact form. Your information sent through the contact form is never used for advertising and solely for the purpose of responding to your message. The message is then forwarded to Gmail so that we can respond to it.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Our use of Google Analytics will also store cookies on your browser to utilize the service they provide. The cookie tracks an IP address and unique identifiers sent by your browser to get an understanding of our visitor actions on the site, such as what kind of device is being used to view the site, what pages are viewed and the referrer (how they arrived at the site). This IP is anonymized before it is stored to disk by by removing the last octet of the IP before storage. It may also collect Google information, which may include end user location, search history, YouTube history, and data from sites that partner with Google from signed-in Google users who have consented to this association with Google. Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

Who we share your data with

If have an account on this site and you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

Visitor comments or the messages through the contact form may be checked through an automated spam detection service such as hCapcha, reCapcha or Akismet.

IP addresses may be shared with Cloudflare or Jetpack for security measures. This is to help protect this site against DDoS attacks, hacking attacks, or brute force attacks by blocking the IP’s access to the server.

Browsing data is shared with Google via their Google Analytics service and stored on their servers. This data is to see what content is of interest to our users, better understand how they found us and also if visitors are returning to our site.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment or send a private message, the comment or message and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue and to be able to respond to your message.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Google Analytics data is stored indefinitely.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

You may delete the cookies on your browser at any time to clear your local Google Analytics data and also use this browser plug-in developed by Google to opt-out of Google Analytics tracking.
